More info about Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
From The Hollywood Reporter: Today with filmmakers working independently, it's much harder to assemble projects. Talent agencies, however, have an edge when it comes to packaging films with their clients. A case in point is ICM's recent deal for its client Sidney Lumet to direct Capitol Films' thriller "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead," which goes into production in New York in July. Produced by Michael Cerenzie, Brian Linse and William S. Gilmore, its screenplay is by Lumet and Kelly Masterson. Starring are Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke, Albert Finney and Marisa Tomei.

With "Dead," for instance, none of the film's principal stars is an ICM client, but director Sidney Lumet -- an Oscar nominee for directing "The Verdict," "Network," "Dog Day Afternoon" and "12 Angry Men" and for co-writing the adapted screenplay for "Prince of the City" -- is represented by ICM. "Jeff Berg has represented Sidney Lumet for many, many years," Sadoff said. "Sidney wanted to do this project. Michael Cerenzie developed the film for several years and came to us to help put it together and find a financier for it. We were able to help close all the actor deals. We were able to bringing in financing and it's going to shoot in about four weeks in New York."

"Dead" came together, he explained, as a "screenplay that Michael Cerenzie had with Sidney Lumet that they were developing for a few years. Sidney wanted to make this movie. He had a list of actors that wanted to work with him. He had a budget that he said that he needed to have to make this film and we were able to go out and secure the financing through Capitol Films. Capitol is one of the premiere international sales companies (and is) based in London. They financed and sold (Robert Altman's) 'Gosford Park.' They've been in business for 17 years. They're a very successful independent foreign sales and financing company. I've worked with them for many years and we brought it to them and they were able with us to come up with a financing plan that made sense and they committed to finance the movie. ICM will represent the North American rights to the movie."

Production will get underway in about four weeks, he added, "without a domestic distributor. We may potentially before we start shooting get a distributor on board, but the picture is green lit without a domestic distributor. And that's happened on several of the films that we've worked on, including 'Flyboys' that Tony Bill directed with James Franco, Martin Henderson and David Ellison, an over-$60 million World War I fighter pilot action movie that we helped package and helped put the financing together with (producer) Dea
